The Quick Answer
The main differences between the Fender American Performer and American Professional guitars are the neck profile and pickups. American Professional II guitars have thicker necks and higher output pickups giving them a more modern tone compared to the American Performer guitars.
The American Professional series is approximately $300 (or £400 in the UK) more expensive than the American Performer series of guitars, but does include a number of upgrades such as:
- Sculpted neck heel (all models)
- Additional switching options (on the Tele and Jazzmaster models)
- Bone nut (instead of synthetic bone on all models)
- Tremolo system improvements (on Strat and Jazzmaster models)
- Hard-Shell Case (instead of a soft gig-bag with all models)
Which Models are Available?
The Fender American Performer range only includes right-handed versions of the Stratocaster, Telecaster and Jazzmaster, whereas the American Professional II range includes left-handed versions as well. Only the American Performer range includes the Mustang shape.
Here is a table showing all the models (and pickup configurations) available at the time of writing in the American Performer and Professional II series. RH = right handed version, LH = left-handed version.

Stratocaster HSS | RH | RH |
Telecaster SS | RH | RH and LH |
Telecaster HH | None | RH |

Pickups
Guitar pickups are one of the main components of any electric guitar.
But do guitar pickups make a difference in sound? This can be a difficult question with many different answers.
The most important thing to note is that it is not just the type of pickup that determines a guitar’s sound, but also how and where you place the pickup on the guitar.
In this guide, we will discuss the different types of pickups and how they affect your sound.
We will outline how pickups work and what are the central factors that determine how they influence the tone of your instrument.
Finally, we will help you compare different models and make an informed decision about which pickup is right for you.
Басовый усилитель: Fender Bassman

New Hardware
Fender has selected new Yosemite alnico single-coil pickups and Patent-pending DoubleTap humbucking pickups to power the new American Performer Series models. The new humbucker lets you split coils without losing volume, which is a nice touch.
These incorporate the Greasebucket tone circuit, which cuts treble, yet maintains gain and clarity. You also get push-pull pots on some models. So, for example, you can blend the neck pickup with the bridge and middle pickups on the Stratocaster models.
There’s also new ClassicGear vintage-modern 18:1 ratio machine heads. They should keep with the vintage styling but offer better control over tuning up these new models.

New Colours for 2019
For 2019 Fender has also introduced a whole new range of colours, which includes Arctic White, Aubergine, Honeyburst, Penny, Satin Surf Green, Satin Sonic Blue and Satin Lake Placid Blue. This includes both gloss and satin finishes across the various models in the new series.

Modern Classics?
Okay, there is a lot here and so it will probably take us all a while to let it sink in and make an informed decision on what we feel about this new range. My first thoughts were, “Why have they ditched the classic Jazzmaster tremolo?” and then “Oooh, Telecaster with a humbucker in the neck, nice”. So as you can tell, I have mixed feelings towards the various models.
So you get a Stratocaster-style ‘Synchronized Tremolo’ style bridge on the Jazzmaster and a new tremolo design for the Mustang as well.
I’m happy that Fender is trying out new things and it is good to know that they are attempting to give players more, for reasonable money. After all, these are USA-built instruments and so we can expect a high level of craftsmanship. I’m not convinced about some of the new colours, but this is, of course, subjective and you may well love them.

Verdict
There may well be some great new guitars in this huge release, but I find that with well over 30 variations (9 guitars with various finishes), it could be a little confusing for new buyers. I think that’s important as these are the types of guitars that new players would be looking at as their first proper American-made Fender. And if I was in the market for a Jazzmaster I would avoid this version like the plague.

Performance
Fender chose the right name for this new series of guitars as they are true performers in every sense of the word. The Yosemite single-coil pickups deliver ‘bucket list’ Strat and Tele tones better than anything Fender has produced for their sub-$2,000 guitars in the last decade or so.
The tones are ballsy and full-bodied, hitting the amp’s front-end with Manny Pacquiao punch and singing with Freddie Mercury sweetness. The coolest aspect about the Strat HSS’s pickups is that the output is perfectly balanced between the humbucker’s dual-and split-coil settings as well between the full humbucker and middle/neck pickups.
While the jumbo frets certainly measure meatier than typical medium-jumbo frets, they don’t feel overly big under the fingertips, providing satisfying fast and smooth action and maintaining body and sustain when pushing bent notes to the limit. The ‘Modern C’ neck profile is slim but feels substantial and solid in the player’s hands. These are some of the most comfortable stock Strat and Tele necks I’ve ever played.
The overall construction quality is immaculate and flawless. The necks fit super-snug into the body pockets, every screw is perfectly installed and the overall attention to detail is shockingly good for guitars in this price range — and beyond! Whether you’re looking for a first Strat or Tele or considering an upgrade, the American Performer series models are very worthy contenders.

- New Yosemite single-coil pickups are individually voiced to each model and installation position.
- The Greasebucket tone system maintains clarity and consistent gain no matter where the tone knobs are positioned.
- The Stratocaster HSS has a DoubleTap humbucking pickup at the bridge with a coil-split function accessible via the lower push/pull tone knob.
- The Telecaster has a vintage-style ‘ashtray’ bridge with three brass barrel saddles that deliver classic Tele twang.
Where Did the Precision Bass get its Name?
To understand where the name comes from you must first understand a little of the instrument’s history. Back when Leo Fender was first putting pen to paper and designing the original version, amplified instruments were only at the very beginning of their life.
The first of these amplified instruments to gain widespread use was the lead electric guitar. This then led to issues of traditional double bass players struggling to be heard over these amplified guitars. The release of the P Bass overcame them and allowed bass players to once again be heard in a band setting.
The name itself comes from the use of frets. The frets included on the P Bass were similar to those found on electric guitars and allowed bassists to be far more accurate in their play. The oversized double basses of the past were fretless and therefore much more difficult to master.
The introduction of these frets made the P Bass instantly accessible to musicians who may have been previously unable to get to grips with double basses.
American Performer Jazzmaster
The American Performer Jazzmaster includes the Yosemite single-coil pickups, designed for rich, expressive tones. With flat-staggered pole pieces to increase output and a shellac potting that lets the coil breathe while controlling feedback, Yosemite pickups produce dynamic sounds ideal for any musical situation.
The American Performer Jazzmaster also features Greasebucket tone circuitry that lets you shape your highs without adding bass. The “Modern C”- shaped neck sports a 9.5”-radius fingerboard that’s comfortable for all playing styles, along with 22 jumbo frets for effortless and accurate bending. As a final touch, the traditional Jazzmaster tailpiece and bridge have been replaced with a Strat-style six-screw vintage-style synchronized tremolo bridge.
Also available in Penny, Satin Lake Placid Blue & Vintage White.

This is great for thinning out the rhythm tones and letting you get some great funk sounds. The American Performer also has a Greasebucket tone system, letting you roll down on volume to clean up, but without muddying up the tone with too much bass. It’s features like these two that make it no wonder Fender calls this the American Performer: it has everything you need to get the tone you want on stage!
