I hadn’t heard of DrumDrops until recently when I stumbled upon these two disco kits. Lately, I’ve had a big love for kits from the 70s on records like Aja by Steely Dan and Storm at Sunup by Gino Vanelli. That’s precisely the type of sound you’ll get.

Those who like dry-sounding drums will love the Vintage Funk & Disco Dual kit. Both kits run off of the Kontakt player, so you won’t have to purchase Kontakt if you don’t have it.

E-Phonic Drumatic 4

Drumatic 4 is available for Windows and OSX. It uses a mix of subtractive, FM and wavetable synthesis to achieve its tones.

It comes with over 30 noise types with two stereo noise oscillators, graphical envelopes (pitch, filter and volume).

This is more of a drum machine than a drumkit, but it’s always good to have variety in your plugin suite, and this baby comes with plenty of usable sounds.

You can “try before you buy” and get the downloadable demo, but it’s probably best to think of this as a freemium plugin.

TheDrumSource

TheDrumSource is a sample-based drum machine VST with a sequencer. It has been created specifically to look and feel like a classic hardware drum machine.

It supports a variety of sample formats (including 24 bit samples) and comes with a built-in sample browser, 24 sequences, independent channel controls (pan, volume, pitch, length, swing), Mats Lindfors sample package, 12 output channels, RUN mode, SYNC mode, MIDI mode and more.

How it sounds obviously depends a lot on what samples you use but the interface is clean and simple, which is a huge benefit when it comes to making awesome beats.

Sub is a relatively straightforward virtual analogue drum machine heavily inspired by the TR-808. The controls are fairly limited, in most cases offering just pan and level, but also adding a few extra parameters for the kick and snare, plus tuning for the toms and congas. Sonically Sub does an excellent 808 impersonation, though (although to our ear the hats are more 606-ish).

Sub’s main USP, however, lies in the addition of sub-bass control (hence the name), that can be used to enhance and beef-up the low end coming from the kick. This lets users create and refine the distinctive long, bassy kicks often used as basslines by hip-hop and techno producers — and it’s worth a download for this alone.

Grooove BPB is a comprehensive professional-level drum sampler. It has six dual pads, which means that each one can hold two samples simultaneously; an interesting feature for building layered sounds. This VST has many advanced controls that allow users to create professional sounds. These sounds can be “brought to life” if they are assigned to a midi note and played on a keyboard or MIDI-compatible pads. The sounds change depending on how much pressure and velocity the “drummer” applies on each of the pads.

For impatient people, the instrument includes 14 preset drum kits and 150 drum built-in samples, expandable with external samples. It’s not an easy-to-program tool but it’s at a professional level. That’s why it deserves a place on this list.

Synsonic BD-909 / BD-808 Free

This pair of free percussion synths from German developer Synsonic focus entirely on just one drum sound: the kick. Specifically, the synthesised kicks found on Roland’s iconic TR-909 and TR-808 drum machines.

While a one-track drum plugin might not sound all that useful on paper, it’s worth bearing in mind that between them those two bass drums underpin entire genres, from house and techno to hip-hop, so having access to speciality tools dedicated to shaping the perfect emulation is nothing to scoff at.

In reality, the hardware that inspires these plugins is fairly limited — you can’t even tune a real 808 kick — but Synsonic has ramped up the flexibility significantly with a variety of parameters absent from the originals.

The BD-808 adds course and fine tuning, plus an extended Long Decay mode. RD-909, meanwhile, has individual controls to shape the tone, pitch sweep and noise of the drum, plus an added distortion effect. Both plugins can track incoming MIDI notes, too, meaning they can be put to use for percussive basslines and melodies as well as traditional drums.

We’re bending our own rules slightly here, as these two tools are actually user-created Packs for Ableton Live rather than fully-fledged plugins. Their source warrants their inclusion on our list though, seeing as both emerge from the studio of Dutch producer and vintage synth connoisseur Danny Wolfers (aka Legowelt).

Anyone familiar with Legowelt’s prolific musical output will recognise the hard-hitting, lo-fi quality of the sounds here, which is what sets the instruments apart from Live’s own stock 808 and 909 kits. These aren’t simply sets of lo-fi samples, though — both instruments here load in Rack form, equipped with a carefully configured chain of Live’s stock effects, including compressors, reverbs and EQs, with Macros configured to tailor the retro-punchiness of the sounds.

The benefit of the Live Rack format is that both instruments here are easily customisable. Try loading your own samples in to run through the effect chains, or subbing Live’s effects out for your favourite third-party plugins, in order to make the kits your own.

Urban Beats is one of NI’s older Kontakt instruments, now offered free as part of the company’s Komplete Start bundle. As that slightly outdated ‘urban’ tag suggests, the sound palette here leans toward hip-hop and R&B, although its selection of staple drum machine sounds works equally well for house, techno and other club-focused genres.

The main appeal here is that the instrument lets users create grooves in one of three ways — by triggering individual sounds via MIDI, triggering pre-programmed loops or by step-sequencing patterns using the Groovebox mode. 

As well as the usual mixer features, there’s a handy Master FX section with a resonant filter as well as convolution, reverb, delay and saturation. While the UI looks a touch dated and the range of kits is relatively small, this is still one of the best free drum machines out there right now.

If you browsed internet forums in the late 2000s, there’s no doubt you’ve already heard of Steven Slate. SSD5 is the latest iteration of Steven Slate’s drum library. SSD5 comes with a whopping 103 kick drums, 111 snares, hundreds of tom/cymbal/percussion sounds, and 1,000 groves. Some features include:

How Do I Install VST Plugins?

The exact process can vary depending on what DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software you’re using.

But you can follow the basic steps outlined below, and if you still can’t figure out, go looking for online tutorials.

Here we go:

• Download the plugin. Download it to your computer. In some cases, it will come in a compressed folder (e.g. ZIP), so in that case, you will need to extract the files.
• Set up a folder for all your plugins. If you haven’t done this already, put all your plugins in a specific folder on your computer (a location you will remember) and move the plugin you just downloaded into the folder as well.
• Scan for new plugins. You can typically find this option within the settings of your DAW. After scanning for new plugins, they should be automatically installed.
• You’re done. You’re ready to use your plugins. Again, how you do this is going to vary based on your DAW software, but you should be able to select the plugins you installed for specific tracks in your mix.

It might seem a tad intimidating at first, but once you figure it out, you’ll find that installing new VSTs is relatively easy.

I would encourage you to keep your folders organized and clean. Remove defective and buggy VSTs and those that cause your DAW to crash. Keep those that work well and you can find utility for.

This will ensure that you keep a stable working environment, which to me is crucial to staying efficient.
