Three PRS SE Standard 24 Body Finishes

The PRS SE Standard 24 guitars come in your choice of three gorgeous body finishes. You might have a hard time choosing, but you could eventually buy one in each color at the price of this guitar.

PRS SE Standard 24 – Tobacco Sunburst

Tobacco Sunburst is probably my favorite finish for this guitar.

It really shows off the grain of the mahogany body and gives the guitar a lot of class. Also, the black headstock looks so sharp with it!

If you’re a sunburst Strat guy or like a more traditional finish, then this is the color for you.

PRS SE Standard 24 Translucent Blue

The Translucent Blue finish is sort of the “in-between” color.

It has less flash than the Vintage Cherry but pops more than the Tobacco Sunburst.

The blue stain looks great with the cream binding and it has a matching headstock!

PRS SE Standard 24 Vintage Cherry

If you like the look of a Gibson SG in Vintage Cherry, then you should take a closer look at this body finish.

It’s amazing how the color of this guitar can influence how you play it. This one just screams “Rock and Roll!”

This finish will definitely get you noticed quickly, no matter where you play.

PRS SE Standard 24 Review: Policies and Additional Info

While warranties are set by PRS Guitars, things like shipping and return policies vary store by store. We recommend shopping for your guitars through Sweetwater because of its great customer service.

With that being said, the following information is based on PRS’s company warranty and Sweetwater’s store policies.

Shipping

All guitars from Sweetwater ship for free following a thorough 55-point inspection.

Fans of Sweetwater not only rave about the company’s customer service, but also their attention to detail when it comes to shipping higher-end products, like guitars. That’s important, because the guitar will only arrive in a PRS-branded cardboard box.

If you’re concerned about protecting your new PRS from the risks of shipping, you can order a case from Sweetwater and they’ll put the guitar in it before shipping it out.

Warranty

As long as you register your guitar and return your warranty card within 30 days of purchasing, you can take advantage of PRS Guitar’s lifetime warranty program.

PRS prides itself on making the highest quality of guitars that should last a lifetime, thus offering a lifetime warranty on issues that are specifically manufacturer defects.

That can be tough to prove, though. A PRS Guitar warranty doesn’t cover normal wear and tear, or negligence, like leaving your guitar in an extremely humid environment.

If PRS luthiers determine your guitar was a victim of a manufacturer’s defect, they will remedy the issue and ship your guitar back at no expense.

Return Policy

What happens if you end up hating the PRS SE Standard 24? We don’t think that’ll be the case, but in case it’s not the one for you, Sweetwater offers a great, “no hassle” return policy.

You have 30 days to test out your guitar and send it back no questions asked, as long as it’s still in the same new condition as when you received it.

If you want a refund, Sweetwater will deduct the actual amount to ship it back to them from that refund.

Playability

Being an all-rounder, Standard 24 may be the best choice when it comes to playability. Owing to its standard features and less specialized range, you can count on this guitar for hours-long practice.

In other words, it’s great for beginners because it covers all the basic features – the humbucking pickup, push-pull tone knob, and a great body design.

Comparably, the Custom 24 will still be an agreeable choice for playability, however, it may be too rigid for beginners.

It features a lot more customizable features that newbies could find bothersome and intimidating.

Unless you’re an experienced, well-versed guitar player, the Standard 24 will do fare much better in terms of improving playability.

Price

Naturally, with the Custom 24’s more specialized features, it would cost significantly more than a Standard 24.

If you’re just starting to appreciate the art of guitar-playing, then Standard 24 is a nice grab.

It features all the standard features that a Paul Reed Smith guitar would have, without the extra bells and whistles.

On the other hand, if you want to take your playing up a notch and want to invest in a well-crafted instrument, then the Custom 24 is your choice.

A lot more attention to detail was given to the Custom 24, particularly in its humbucking pickups and elegant violin body carve that enhances playability and comfort.

Final Thoughts About The PRS SE Standard 24

PRS guitars are generally regarded as great-playing instruments of the highest quality.

Paul Reed Smith has extended the range of his guitars to make them affordable to as many players as possible without sacrificing quality.

The PRS SE Standard 24 is an amazing instrument for the money. It is an extremely versatile guitar that can cover anything from jazz to heavy metal.

It sounds great with overdrive or distortion and cleans up beautifully by turning down the volume control.

Whether you are buying your first electric guitar or you want to add a PRS to your collection, you should definitely check out the SE Standard 24.

About Paul Reed Smith Guitars

Paul Reed Smith Guitars

Paul Reed Smith Guitars is a premier guitar manufacture based in Maryland known for producing some of the most stunning, high-quality guitars out there.

Shop PRS Guitars

The Custom 24 was one of the first guitars that founder Paul Reed Smith sold under his young company, which launched in Maryland in 1985.

At the 1985 NAMM Show, attendees were blown away by the quality and craftsmanship of the guitars, which featured mahogany necks and bodies, an innovative vibrato system and super-accurate custom tuning pegs.

Over the years, the company has developed and released a number of electric and acoustic models, in addition to bass guitars and amplifiers.

The most recognizable trademark of the brand is its bird inlays that adorn the necks of all models. The birds, according to the founder himself, are an homage to his mother, who was an avid bird watcher. On 24-fret models, there are 10 different birds inlaid across the frets.

And as many guitar players know, some of the best players of all time have earned their paychecks playing PRS Guitars, the most famous being Carlos Santana.

The brand’s most recently sponsored player is John Mayer, whose Silver Sky signature model broke several sales records for the company. The guitar did draw some controversy for its striking similarities to a Fender Stratocaster — the model Mayer played before leaving Fender in 2018.

PRS now offers a wide range of guitars at all price points, with the SE Standard 24 serving as one of the brand’s entry-level models.

What Are Paul Reed Smith SE Guitars?

First of all, the SE in this range of PRS guitars means “student edition.” SE guitars have been made in Korea (not Maryland) since 2001 by World Musical Instruments, who also make musical equipment for Line6 and Schecter. In addition, PRS Guitars has an alternate manufacturing facility in Indonesia.

The PRS SE Standard 24 is their most affordable guitar. It is essentially a lower-cost version of their SE Custom 24.

I bought one of the Santana SE guitars back in the 1990s because the price was too good to resist and it sounded and played awesomely! I still play it, even though I have four other much higher-end PRS guitars.

Here is a video from Paul Reed Smith Guitars, where product specialist Bryan Ewald gives you his take on the PRS SE Standard 24 and lets you hear how good the guitar sounds. I think you will really be impressed, so check it out!

What I Don’t Like About The PRS SE Standard 24

What’s not to like about a PRS guitar, even a cheap one?

There’s really nothing I dislike about this guitar. Obviously, Paul Reed Smith wanted to put a very high-quality instrument into the hands of as many players as possible.

The PRS SE models have a price tag that can make owning a guitar of this quality a reality.

Sure, I can be picky and point out that the SE 24 Standard doesn’t have a contoured figured maple top with recessed control knobs, but who would expect it to at the cost of this instrument? The lack of a maple top actually makes the guitar lighter by about two pounds.

If anyone can come up with a reason not to buy this guitar, I’d certainly like to hear it.

What I like About The PRS SE Standard 24

  • Bound mahogany body with lower horn scoop for great neck access
  • Set-in neck gives the guitar lots of resonance and sustain
  • Tremolo system is very expressive and easy to use, like on all PRS guitars
  • Extremely verstile guitar
  • Very well balanced with excellent weight distribution
  • Tremendous value for the money

The 85/15 S pickups

The ceramic magnet does a great job balancing out the natural warmth of the guitar’s all-mahogany body.

85/15 S pickups are articulate and warm-sounding with plenty of chime.

Both pickups sound rich and well-balanced without sounding too “out-of-phase” or shallow when used together in either humbucker or single-coil configuration

The split bridge pickup (single-coil configuration) has a lot of bite without being too harsh-sounding.

Both pickups sound great when played in through a high-gain amp or with distortion pedals. Notes remain distinctive when playing rhythm, even with complex chords.

Turning down the guitar volume cleans up the sound exceptionally well and gives the pickups a sweet acoustic character.

Is PRS A Good Guitar Brand?

PRS Private Stock Guitar

PRS guitars are outstanding in their overall design, especially their appearance, sound, and playability. In addition, these guitars have become internationally known for their high level of quality.

They are played by some of the world’s top players, including Carlos Santana and Al DiMeola.

In addition to building guitars, PRS manufactures a fabulous line of guitar amplifiers. These amps are designed to complement and showcase the sound of their guitar line perfectly.

What is a PRS Private Stock Guitar?

In addition to their usual line of guitars and bass guitars, Private Stock guitars are also available for the player that wants a guitar that plays like a dream and is breathtaking to behold.

They represent the ultimate in instrument design and can be purchased “as is” or custom-built as “one-off” guitars through authorized “Signature” PRS dealers.

Feel & Sounds

Combining the feel and style of classic Fender and Gibson was always the basis of the PRS Standard and Custom, and that doesn’t change here. At 3.38kg (7.44lb), the weight is more Stratocaster than Les Paul, but the glued-in neck itself feels more in the latter camp, especially with its binding.

Its Wide Thin neck profile is the thinnest in depth that PRS offers, this one measuring 20.75mm at the 1st fret, 23.5mm by the 12th. Wide? For the record, the nut width here is 42.9mm, with a string spacing of 36mm.

It’s hard to find fault with the fretwork. The gauge is slightly different to the USA models but not by much (approximately 2.67mm wide by 1.1mm high). The guitar also ships with PRS Classic 0.009 to 0.042 strings, giving it a slinky feel.

(Image credit: Future / Olly Curtis)

But moving up to 10s is easy – aside from a very slight tightening of the vibrato springs – and the bigger gauge seems to drive the guitar a little harder, which means you get more back.

It might not have a rockstar association, but the SE 24-08 certainly holds its own with the SE Silver Sky, the single coils here sounding a little more hollow. We don’t have those classic Strat-like mixes, but the neck and bridge mix (which is hum-cancelling) shouts Fender.

The solo neck, while not quite as woody-sounding as the Silver Sky, is very valid, percussive and soulful, and the bridge single coil actually hints at early Les Paul with a little tone roll-off, or a Telecaster with the tone rolled back up.

There’s not a huge volume leap as we move onto the humbucking sounds; they’re certainly thicker and, again, it’s the bridge that impresses, particularly when thinning the sound a little with some volume reduction.

The neck does that expressive Santana voice to a T, even though it may be too thick for some in a more classic style. Yet again, use those controls because they’re the key to the breadth and range of sounds. Not only do they impress, but they keep us playing way past our allocated testing time. To say this lowly Standard punches above its price is a serious understatement.

Straight out of its gigbag the tuning is extremely stable, too, and once the vibrato and strings are settled in all we can say is that we wish all guitars at this price point stayed and played in tune like this.

Looks

In terms of looks alone, the Custom 24 takes the cake. Without about seven different colors to choose from, this guitar is a stylish addition to your arsenal of musical instruments.

The Custom 24 has a comparably sleeker, richer look – a great contrast to its wide, robust built.

While the Standard 24 and the Custom 24 follow the Paul Reed Smith guitar template down to the knob, the Custom 24 takes it up a notch in terms of contouring and color choice.

Color names like Black Gold Sunburst, Burled Ash Natural, and Quilt Charcoal are sure to grab anyone’s attention.

On the other hand, Standard 24 has a smaller range of color choices. While still very note-worthy, this may put you off if you prefer striking designs.

The Standard 24 color choices feature classic, earthy colors that are more natural-looking. This isn’t all that bad, as it stays true to the vintage, classy aesthetics of a PRS-branded guitar.

If you’re big on looks and a striking appearance, the Custom 24 is your best choice.

Complemented by the PRS vintage design, these patterns and hues will surely pop out and make you feel like an actual rockstar.

PRS SE Standard 24 Vs PRS SE Custom 24

So, what’s the difference between the PRS SE 24 Standard and Custom models? The answer is not much, mainly the body design and finish. Both guitar models play great.

The SE Standard model has an all-mahogany body, while the SE Custom body has a mahogany back with a carved maple top and a flame maple veneer. The maple top makes the Custom model sound a little brighter.

The custom model has four color choices: Black Gold Burst, Bonni Pink, Charcoal Burst, and Faded Blue Burst.

If you want a maple top with a stunning-looking flame veneer, the SE Custom model will cost you about $300 more, which is well worth it in my opinion.
